TV on the Radio @ the Wiltern, 11/6/2008

Wow! I owe you guys some blogging.  It’s like BARACK OBAMA’S LANDSLIDE WIN knocked me on my noodle and I’ve been wandering around in a happy internet fog.  I haven’t started a fight on Digg in weeks!  It’s nice not to be so angry anymore.

Anyhow, wanted to share this photo of TV on the Radio with you from their show at the Wiltern a few weeks back.  I was looking forward to this show with great anticipation because their last album, Dear Science, has turned out to be one of my favorites of this year.  TVOTR’s music seems to be held together in a knot of delicious tensions – romantic but sometimes cold, afro-beat funky but also post-punk-y, accessible yet academic, sad and also celebratory – it’s all in there.  Unfortunately at the Wiltern their musical balancing act didn’t seem to hold together because it all sounded a bit muddled to me, their clean clicks and beats mooshed unceremoniously together with the vocals and horns. I still enjoyed the show, balanced uncomfortably on one of the Wiltern’s railings, singing “Wolf Like Me” and “Staring at the Sun” at the top of my lungs.  I would love to see this band do the classy LA thing and perform at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with the LA Philharmonic.  They are precisely the kind of band whose sound would be epic (sorry, must use this overused internet word of the moment) in that environment.
